It is the final day of 16 Days of Freedom. Thank you to everyone who has read and shared every blog with friends, family, or colleagues. Our work couldn’t be done without you, so thank you.
Human Rights Day
Today is Human Rights Day. It’s celebrated annually on 10 December and is a significant day. This year, though, Human Rights Day is special because it marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
This document is a landmark and deserves our attention and celebration today. The Declaration enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being – regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or another status.
Seventy-five years ago, the Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly and set out, for the first time, the fundamental rights afforded to every human being that must be protected.
Over the last 75 years, the Declaration has aimed at infusing societies with equality, fundamental freedoms, and justice. The Declaration “enshrines the rights of all human beings and is a global blueprint for international, national, and local laws and policies.”
Today, we celebrate Human Rights 75. We hope that by celebrating, we raise awareness and increase knowledge of the universality of human rights and inspire young people to take action to protect their rights.
