Modern slavery is rife in war zone countries. Therefore, rape, sexual slavery, forced prostitution, forced pregnancy, forced abortion, enforced sterilisation and forced marriage are common. And we rarely blink an eye. At the Freedom Hub we are disgusted at this abuse of human rights. Therefore we are very grateful that Angelina Jolie uses her influence to bring this issue to light.

Angelina Jolie Says Children ‘Invisible Victims’ of Rape in War

“Jolie gave the example of Yazidi children she had met in northern Iraq. Thousands of their mothers and female relatives have been abducted, enslaved and abused since 2014 by fighters with the Islamic State group. Many are still in captivity.

“Many of the children witnessed the murder of their relatives, and the rape of their mothers.” she told the council in a virtual meeting. “One doctor who has provided medical care for hundreds of Yazidi women and girls said . “that almost every girl she had treated between the ages of 9 and 17 had been raped or subjected to other sexual violence. In some cases, victims were girls under the age of 9.”

Sexual violence is a tactic

The U.N. secretary-general’s envoy on sexual violence in conflict, Pramila Patten, said:

“sexual violence is a tactic of war. And a tool of political repression. Used to dehumanise, destabilise and forcibly displace populations. It includes rape, sexual slavery, forced prostitution, forced pregnancy, forced abortion, enforced sterilisation and forced marriage.”

According to the UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF STATE Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons

The use of modern slavery as a tactic in the armed conflicts in Iraq and Syria is particularly alarming. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), as well as other armed groups and militias, continue to intimidate populations. And they devastate communities through unconscionable violence, fear, and oppression. ISIL has made the targeting of women and children, particularly from Yezidi and other minority groups, a hallmark of its campaign of atrocities. In the past year, ISIL has abducted, systematically raped, and abused thousands of women and children. Some as young as 8 years of age.

Many of the horrific human rights abuses that ISIL has engaged in also amount to human trafficking. Women and children are sold and enslaved. Also distributed to ISIL fighters as spoils of war. They are forced into marriage and domestic servitude. Or subjected to horrific physical and sexual abuse. ISIL has established “markets” where women and children are sold with price tags attached and has published a list of rules on how to treat female slaves once captured. ”  Read more.
