Survivor Story NSW

The Freedom Hub has changed my life, before I came I couldn’t talk to anyone, I felt so nervous. I could barely talk to my education coach. I didn’t know how to write a CV, a cover letter, or even talk to a manager. When I would go to a venue with several people, I would sit by myself. Now things have changed. My education coach helped me prepare for interviews, we practised, and practised, and practised. She helped me find jobs and now I’ve had several jobs. I really like my current job and I get paid so well. I have friends, I’m in a local basketball team and I have so much confidence.

Survivor Story QLD

Coffee with M. During a recent wellness check-in, Matt. shared how his confidence had grown through his coursework. With the support of his Education Coach, who matched his motivation, he successfully completed multiple classes each week. M. later gained experience at Royal Foods—our first-ever employment placement. Though he finished early to take on full-time work, he credits his classes at The Freedom Hub and his time at Royal Foods for helping him stay focused on his bigger goals. Next term, M. will begin coaching in conversational English to continue growing and improving.

Coffee with J.

J. arrived at a café, gently rocking her two-month-old baby in a stroller. A motivated learner with dreams of becoming a chef, she had to pause her studies due to pregnancy and a health scare. With a return to health and baby arrived, she’s eager to get back on track, starting with the Money Minded course. Her goal? To create an independent home for herself and her child. Once she has financial stability, she plans to return to her Certificate III—another step toward her dream career. A heartwarming moment during her Wellness Survey revealed her enthusiasm for Australian culture. When asked about her understanding of Aussie slang, she smiled and said,

“Of course I know about being Aussie — you guys taught me all about it in Culture Class!”

Thanks to a partnering organisation, Keight was also able to provide J. with additional resources for her baby. J. expressed deep gratitude for both the learning opportunities and the support to build a secure, independent future.

Education Coach Sally and M.

Sally G, a retired volunteer, is making an incredible impact in the life of M., a survivor she is coaching. With her unwavering support and deep community connections in Brisbane, Sally is going above and beyond to help M. gain confidence and independence. Sally has been leading M.’s Australian Culture class. As M. prepares to move to a new neighbourhood, Sally is stepping up once again. She is actively researching the area, identifying key resources such as the local library, support groups, and shopping options, ensuring M. feels prepared for this next chapter. Understanding that change can bring uncertainty, Sally is also enhancing the My Community class, tailoring it to provide M. with even greater independence and self reliance. Her commitment, care, and extra-mile attitude are truly making a difference, proving that the right support can turn challenges into opportunities.

“I had finally worked up the courage to run from my captor and found myself being in another type of slavery… I was enslaved into a system that forced me from case worker to case worker and government offices and forms, feeling pushed around with no choices or care. I was lost, lonely and scared for my future. Then I met The Freedom Hub and in an instant everything changed. They cared, they explained my choices and offered me help to see a future of success and freedom. I will never forget the opportunity, that they gave me and feeling free.”

What We Do

The Freedom Hub is more than just a charity—we are a movement for change. We operate the only specialised long-term care services for survivors of modern slavery in Australia. Our Survivor School provides free, personalised classes to help survivors recover from trauma and gain work readiness skills. Through our Peer Support Program, we build community, foster resilience, and offer activities and workshops to help survivors thrive.

We also run social enterprises like our café, event venue, and online store to fund our work and raise awareness. These businesses cover our operational costs, allowing donations to directly impact the lives of survivors.
