Marriage policies changing for women in Saudi

Big Changes Could Be Happening Very Soon For Women Getting Married in Saudi Arabia

Having banned the practice of forced marriage in 2005, Saudi’s religious and political authorities have turned their focus to equalising the legislation surrounding marriage contracts.

In addition to reviewing and consenting to the contract, Saudi’s new policies will also require women to explicitly state their contentment with their new prospective life partners. Also giving them the opportunity to appoint a guardian throughout the process.

In essence, the move is another step in the right direction for the women of Saudi Arabia. It is ensuring greater visibility and involvement in what could arguably be the most important contract of their lives.

The Freedom Hub exists to help people who have experienced this crime and we partner in the fight to end global slavery. We work with women who have experienced modern slavery in our country. Many have been forced into marriage against their will, or they are tricked into marriage. Some are under 18 years of age and have run as they believe they are ‘at risk’ of modern slavery. We have had children as young as 11 years of age forced into marriage in our country.
